Conditioned Reaction
By the time most of us reach adulthood we have accumulated enough experience to deal with most of the challenges that life throws at us. Every experience we have ever had and the way we dealt with each of these experiences is stored in the subconscious. Whenever we encounter a similar experience we automatically deal with it the way we did before and this is how we develop conditioned reactions so that we don’t have to think about inventing the wheel every time we want to drive a car.
Freeze
Problems arise, however, when we are faced with challenges that we have never encountered before and especially when these challenges are perceived as life threatening. Most people have never been mugged or have had a gun put to their head but during such events most people freeze unless they have had the experience before and learned how to deal with it. It is during this ‘freeze stage’ that a person under attack enters a state of hypnosis as the victim searches the subconscious for instructions on what to do. It is during this stage that the mind takes snap shots of everything and this includes images, smells, tastes, sensations, sounds and , of course, feelings. These are all stored in the files labelled ‘uncategorised’ to be dealt with when the emergency has passed. The problem is that most people never deal with the traumatic event and all of the things that were stored in the ‘uncategorised’ file remain active until this is done.
Subconscious Triggers
If at the time of the traumatic incident there was freshly cut grass in the vicinity then every time the victim smells freshly cut grass, even years later, the subconscious triggers the same feelings of anxiety the person felt when the original traumatic incident occurred. Symptoms such as asthma or hay fever could be physical manifestations of the inner emotional turmoil triggered by the freshly cut grass. This is not to say that asthma or hay fever are always evidence of a person having suffered a traumatic event
