Trauma and PTSD — Healing at the Root with Hypnotherapy

Trauma does not have to define your future. Mary Nathan provides a safe, compassionate space to gently process and release what no longer needs to be carried.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma is the emotional wound left behind by experiences that overwhelmed our capacity to cope at the time they occurred. It may stem from a single, clearly defined event — an accident, a bereavement, an assault, or a medical crisis. Or it may be the cumulative result of repeated difficult experiences over time: growing up in an unstable home, experiencing sustained criticism or neglect, or living through a prolonged period of fear or uncertainty.

Whatever its origin, trauma leaves its mark not just in our memories, but in our bodies, our nervous systems, and our subconscious patterns of response. Long after the original event has passed, the emotional imprint it left can continue to shape how we feel, how we relate to others, and how safe or unsafe we feel in the world.

How Trauma Affects Daily Life

Trauma can manifest in many different ways, and not everyone will recognise what they are experiencing as trauma. Some of the most common signs include:

  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or distressing memories that arise unexpectedly
  • Nightmares or disturbed sleep
  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected from yourself or others
  • Heightened alertness, anxiety, or a persistent sense of danger
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that trigger painful memories
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
  • Feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness that seem disproportionate to the present situation
  • Unexplained physical symptoms such as tension, chronic pain, or fatigue

You do not need to have experienced a dramatic or obvious trauma to be affected in these ways. Many people struggle for years with the effects of experiences they minimise or dismiss — telling themselves it was not bad enough to warrant help, or that others had it worse. If something hurt you, it matters. And if it is still affecting your life, it deserves attention.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD is a specific pattern of trauma responses that persists long after the original event and significantly interferes with daily life. It is most commonly associated with combat, serious accidents, or violent assault — but it can develop following any experience that was overwhelming, frightening, or left the person feeling helpless or out of control.

PTSD is not a sign of weakness, and it is not permanent. With the right support and approach, meaningful and lasting healing is entirely possible — and Mary Nathan has helped many clients move through and beyond PTSD to rebuild a life that feels safe, meaningful, and their own.

How Hypnotherapy Helps with Trauma

Hypnotherapy is particularly well suited to working with trauma because it allows access to the subconscious mind — where traumatic memories and their associated emotional responses are stored. Unlike approaches that work primarily at a conscious, intellectual level, hypnotherapy can reach the deeper layers of the mind where trauma truly lives.

Mary uses analytical hypnotherapy to gently guide clients back towards earlier experiences — not to relive them in a distressing way, but to revisit them with the support and perspective of the adult self that was not available at the time. In this supported state, the emotional charge that has been locked into the memory can be safely processed and released. The memory remains, but it no longer carries the same power to destabilise or overwhelm.

This work is always done gently, carefully, and entirely at your own pace. Mary has extensive experience working with trauma and understands the importance of creating an environment in which clients feel genuinely safe before any deeper work begins. There is no rushing, no pressure, and no expectation that you will share more than you feel ready to share.

A Safe Space to Begin

The consulting room in Peel is a quiet, warm, entirely private space — chosen precisely because it feels nothing like a clinical setting. For clients who cannot travel to the clinic, or who feel more comfortable in their own surroundings, sessions are also available online via Zoom or FaceTime. Many clients working with trauma find that being in their own home actually supports the process, providing a sense of safety and familiarity that helps them open up.

Everything discussed in sessions is held in the strictest confidence. Mary abides by a rigorous professional code of conduct and is a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy UK. She is also fully covered by professional indemnity insurance.

You Do Not Have to Carry This Alone

Trauma can make people feel profoundly alone — as though no one could truly understand what they have been through, or as though they are somehow broken beyond repair. Neither is true. Mary has worked with people carrying experiences of many kinds, across many years, and she brings to every session the same quality of calm, patient, non-judgmental care.

If you have been living with the effects of trauma — whether recently or for many years — please do consider reaching out. The first step is simply a conversation. Your free initial consultation is completely confidential and carries no obligation of any kind.
